CLOCKING

 | | | | |
A New Threat
Recent reports have shown a worrying new development in the illegal clocking industry. Fraudulent dealers have now been known to clock vehicles before making a sale and then return the odometer to its original setting just before the customer returns to collect.
Customers rarely check the figure on the odometer before driving off the forecourt and are subsequently stuck with the car with no evidence of clocking having taken place.
Motorists are advised to have the vehicle verified by an independent vehicle association, such as the AA or RAC, to ensure that the mileage is genuine. They should also study the MoT and service history and make a note of the reading. It is wise to write down the figure shown on the odometer so that you are able to re-check the mileage before you part with any cash on collection.
Remember that, once you have bought a vehicle, you may well find you are stuck with it, even if it does turn out to have been clocked. This means that thoroughly checking the vehicle's history and current condition are extremely important.
