Identity Fraud and Theft - Not a Victimless Crime
When we think of car theft, most of us would imagine the perpetrator smashing a window and hotwiring the ignition. In the past, this assumption would have been pretty close to the truth. However, the level of car crime was significant enough to spur the car industry to fight back.

Car manufacturers have now begun to design cars with such effective internal security that, over the last five years, it has become virtually impossible to steal a car using these traditional methods.
|
Nowadays, if you're going steal a modern car, you're really going to need to get your hands on the keys.
Not to be defeated, car thieves have managed to come up with two new methods of getting their hands on the keys and the car. The first of these is the new and frightening crime of 'car-jacking'. Recent media reports have highlighted a frighteningly high number of crimes involving criminals attacking owners and stealing their cars while the keys are still in the ignition.
The second of these crimes has largely managed to stay out of the limelight. Obtaining cars through fraudulent means is known as Impersonation Fraud. In this case, the criminal aims to create bogus identities for themselves and use counterfeit documentation to add validity to them. Their counterfeit documentation is all they need to get the cars they want from showrooms and hire firms.
