Tips for driving in....

      Mainland Europe
  • By law, your car must display a GB sticker/plate on the rear.

  • You must fit headlight beam converters (to prevent dazzling oncoming traffic) and carry spare bulbs.

  • There are strict drink-driving laws in Europe, so know the limit. Preferably don't drink at all.

  • Stay within speed limits. Radar traps are common.

  • Throughout mainland Europe, it is compulsory to carry a warning triangle, a first aid kit and spare bulb kit. If you break down, you should put the red triangle at least 50 metres (150 metres on a motorway hard shoulder) behind your car, on the same side of the road.

  • The minimum age for driving in mainland Europe is 18 - even if you've passed your test in the UK.

  • Pay-as-you go tolls are found on most motorways in France, Spain and Italy. You can pay by credit card: many motorways have automatic booths.

  • Seat belts are compulsory in the front and rear, if fitted.
