Since 1996, learner drivers have taken a theory test in addition to the practical test.
This is designed to test your knowledge of the Highway Code and to gauge your attitude to safe driving.
On the day of the test you will need:
- Your signed driving licence and photographic ID, or both parts of your signed photocard licence
- Your appointment card or booking number
You must pass the theory test before you can apply for the practical examination, though it is easier to learn the theory if you are learning the practical side at the same time.
The theory test is computerised; you simply touch the screen to select the answers. Each candidate goes into a private booth and has 40 minutes to answer 35 multiple-choice questions on all aspects of driving. You must score at least 30 correct answers to pass.
After the test you can wait at the examination centre for your result, though if you fail, you must arrange another date for a retest.
Only 37 percent of people fail the theory test first time. The most commonly failed sections regard documents and the rules of the road.
