Congratulations - but this is only the beginning. The driving test is limited, and real-world conditions will throw up far more problems than you encountered in your lessons.
Avoid adding to the high accident rate among new drivers by continuing your training after you have passed your test.
- The Pass Plus scheme was introduced by the Government to help new drivers gain experience of difficult road and weather conditions. The six hours of training includes driving on motorways and in bad weather. You have to take the training within a year of passing the driving test and you get a certificate for completing the course.
Young drivers can get an insurance discount for completing the Pass Plus scheme, and 63 percent of insurers support it. Currently about 3000 drivers register for the scheme each month.
- The Institute of Advanced Motorists was established 40 years ago to enable qualified drivers and motorcyclists to improve their driving skills and road safety. The IAM offers an Advanced Driving Test which lasts about 90 minutes and covers between 35 and 40 miles. The test is particularly useful for newly qualified drivers who have little experience of motorways or night driving, and for experienced drivers who want to improve their defensive driving skills. To prepare for the advanced test, candidates can join one of the local IAM groups (there are over 200 in the UK).
- The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is a membership organisation aimed at reducing road accidents by improvement of driving skills and awareness of road safety. RoSPA offer an Advanced Driving Test which lasts for 90 minutes and covers a range of road conditions. Gold, Silver and Bronze passes are awarded on completion of the test but you will be required to take a refresher test every three years. All examiners hold a police advanced driving qualification and many are police instructors. There are some 40 local Advanced Drivers Associations (RoADA) who can help candidates prepare for the test.
