- Beware of livestock blocking the road. Stop the car and switch off the engine. Wait for the cattle to pass before moving on.
- Look out for warning signs. These will help you prepare for hazards such as narrowing roads or sharp bends.
- High hedges can block your view ahead and country lanes don't have pavements. Assume you'll meet a stationary lorry or family of pedestrians around every blind corner. Also be prepared for horse riders and cyclists. Slow down and allow plenty of room to overtake.
- Where there's no street lighting, turn on your headlights at dusk, so that your car can always be seen. Make use of safety devices, cat's eyes, marker posts and chevrons mark bends in the road.
