USED BIKE CHECKLIST

Here’s what to check for between tyre kicks when you’re looking at a used bike.

Engine
  • Look for excessive smoke on start
  • Check under bike for leaks
  • Avoid (raced) bikes with drilled sump plugs
  • Inspect for rust/accident damage on the exhaust
Frame
  • Study for cracks/rust/repair work
  • Place a piece of string on the front tyre and pull the end piece together around the rear tyre. Bent string means a bent frame
Transmission
  • Check clutch does not drag/ judder/ slip
  • Under acceleration the bike shouldn't jump out of gear
  • Make sure chain isn’t worn or slack
  • Examine the rear sprocket for excessive wear or bent teeth
