Here’s what to check for between tyre kicks when you’re looking at a used bike.
Engine
- Look for excessive smoke on start
- Check under bike for leaks
- Avoid (raced) bikes with drilled sump plugs
- Inspect for rust/accident damage on the exhaust
Frame
- Study for cracks/rust/repair work
- Place a piece of string on the front tyre and pull the end piece
together around the rear tyre. Bent string means a bent frame
Transmission
- Check clutch does not drag/ judder/ slip
- Under acceleration the bike shouldn't jump out of gear
- Make sure chain isn’t worn or slack
- Examine the rear sprocket for excessive wear or bent teeth
